Chris Webb, Senior Kitchen’s Buyer at B&Q, gives his top tips on how to create a luxury kitchen look for a fraction of the price, including where to spend and where to save
1) Worktops and splashbacks

“Stylish worktops and splashbacks can instantly make an out of date kitchen look incredibly modern. Choose an interesting splashback, such as a copper or patterned design. And choose a worktop that will look as good in 10 years as it does today - marble effect laminate is a timeless cost effective option for that luxury look. Make sure your worktop is scratch, heat and spillage resistant – a clean finish is essential.”

2) Cabinet doors
“Advancement in door foil technology now means you can get that wood grain effect or a trend colour for a fraction of the price. Try and replicate the cabinet doors from your favourite luxury kitchen and pay attention to the detail are they matt, gloss, square, rounded? And don’t forget about the handles. They are generally pretty hardy accessories, so you can afford to go on the hunt for a budget copy-cat. Finally, everyone knows a luxury kitchen cabinet never slams shut, so soft close is a must.”

3) Create space
“Keeping your worktops clear of clutter will make your kitchen look clean and elegant. Spend a good amount of time thinking about what storage you need. Use cabinets to utilise all available space, there are now so many different sizes available. And make the most of each inch, with some clever storage solutions to maximise storage capacity.”

4) Think about lighting
“I think lighting can make or break a kitchen. Think about all the different types of activities you do in your kitchen. Cooking – yes, but what about dinner parties, late night conversations at the breakfast bar, homework with the kids and even sometimes a dancefloor. For ambience, try interating LED strip lights under your cabinets. Make sure you have enough downlighting for cooking, a general rule is one light per square metre. And of course a stunning set of pendant lights bring with them instant romance.”

5) Quality doesn’t always come with a hefty price tag
“A new, fresh kitchen will always look great – of course it will, it’s clean and barely touched, with no scratches or wonky draws in sight. However, after a short amount of time, if you haven’t considered the quality of your most used areas, your luxury kitchen will soon start to reveal its budget cracks. The key to long-lasting performance is not always about the material its made from, look out for the quality of the accessories like drawer runners and hinges and always ask about guarentees.”

 Finishing touches
“A high end kitchen features pure luxury, right down the the smallest of detail. And this is where you can really save the cash, without anyone being able to spot the difference. Take the time to scan through pictures of your ideal luxury kitchen and note the finer details. What colour are the taps? Does the hob have an intergrated exactor fan? How have they intregated their appliances? Is there any tiling? What material have they used on the floor? I promise you all these aspects will have cheaper alternatives, both on stores and online. It’ll be well worth the research time.”
